On the relationship between sub‐fossil and recent British Water voles

Sub‐fossil remains of Arvicola from cave deposits dating from the Upper Palaeolithic through to the Romano‐British have been analysed and compared with recent material. The results suggest that only one species of Arvicola has been present in Central England during the past 12,000 years and that, during this time span, there have been trends towards an increase in size and towards a decrease in pro‐odonty.
