SUMMARY. A novel virus associated with acute and chronic hepatitis has been cloned and characterized. The single‐stranded RNA genome is approximately 9000 nucleotides long and has the structure of a virus in the Flaviviridae family. The genes of the virus have been identified and characterized by a number of molecular techniques and a genetic map has been determined.
