The irritant effect of some vehicles used in intramammary mastitis preparations was assessed by indirect mastitis indicators in milk. Mineral oil, soybean oil, peanut oil, a combination of aluminium monostearate, stearic acid and mineral oil as well as isotonic saline were infused intracisternally in cows during mid‐lactation. These vehicles induced a selective increase in the number of somatic cells without any notable effects on the permeability marker antitrypsin or the lysosomal enzyme N‐acetyl‐β‐D‐glucosaminidase (NAGase).
