The concept of normalization has provided the underpinning philosophy in learning disability nursing for more than 20 years. Despite its universality, however, it remains widely misinterpreted and misunderstood, and such problems are likely to be compounded within the context of secure services. This paper analyses the concept of normalization in an attempt to clarify the misconceptions and to stimulate a more widespread application of its principles. A theoretical review precedes an ethnographic examination within a forensic learning disability service. A final analytical phase then suggests directions for future developments.
