summary A non‐invasive method of assessing the status of the temporomandibular joint is presented. The method involves placing a computer‐controlled vibrator against a lower incisor, and microphones over the temporal bones. The amplitude of the signal transmitted is shown to be a function of the input frequency, the position of the mandible and the loading on the joint.
