Summary An apparatus is described for the preparation of standardized cavities in the canine teeth of ferrets. One hundred cavities were cut, and there was highly significant correlation between the distance the bur was advanced (machine depth) and the cavity depth in dentine. It was possible to cut cavities predictively with small and large residual dentine thicknesses. The method described was not damaging to the pulp.
