Summary An accurate method of determining the coefficient of thermal expansion of restorative materials has been devised and found to be suitable for routine testing. It is suggested that this method could be adapted for standard specification tests. The method is independent of sample shape and regularity. Values of coefficient of thermal expansion for several anterior restorative materials are presented. The importance of realistic conditions for sample treatment is discussed.
