Measurements of the thickness of a carbon film evaporated on to biological samples

SUMMARY The energy loss in elastically scattered α‐particles is used to measure the thickness of carbon films used for coating biological samples to prevent surface charging. The lighter mass film on the substrate acts as an absorber which imposes an energy shift on the substrate signal. A relation is achieved between the energy shift and the thickness of the film. The calculation has been tested by measuring the energy shift for a series of films the thickness of which was determined directly by weighing. Good agreement was found, with small deviations at greater thicknesses.
