SUMMARY The elemental composition of tissues and cells in suspension was studied using fully quantitative X‐ray microanalysis. Quantitation was achieved using a commercially available program with reference to gelatin standards. Results showed that cells isolated in suspension differed in composition from those in the corresponding tissue. Elevated concentrations of Na, P, S and Cl were found in the cells in suspension. Concentrations of K and Mg were affected to a lesser extent and concentrations of Fe, Zn and Ca were unaffected by the suspension procedures.
