SUMMARY A method of polishing friable rock samples is proposed in which the usual lubricating agent, water or isopropyl alcohol, is eliminated and the sample polished dry. The plucking usually seen with water‐sensitive samples is not seen and scratching of the surface is not a problem. The reflectivity of vitrinite in a coal is compared when polished dry and by the usual wet method and is found to be similar in both cases.
