SUMMARY A survey of instrumentation for electron energy loss spectrometry and applications of this technique to the local characterization of solids is presented. The use of plasmon losses and core excitation losses are compared. The statistics that determine elemental detection limits for core losses are discussed and areas for future developments in the use of electron energy loss spectrometry are emphasized.
