SUMMARY Contributions to many aspects of geometrical optics and digital image processing have originated in the Electron Microscopy Section of the Cavendish Laboratory. An account of these is given in the opening sections, in the context of related contemporary work, with particular attention to quadrupoles and high frequency lenses and to the phase problem and image handling. Subsequent developments, with especial emphasis on very recent progress, are briefly reviewed in the penultimate section.
