SUMMARY Sintered materials usually show residual porosity which influences their properties. The present views on the development of the structure during processing (pressing, sintering) and some correlations between void structure and properties are reviewed. The important rôle of microscopy in the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of void structures is emphasized.
