SUMMARY A simple adaptation to a vertical illuminator is described to allow a laser beam to be directed into the light path of a microscope where it is focused by the objective lens and used for cellular microsurgery. Any microscope to which a vertical illuminator can be fitted could similarly be used to micro‐irradiate specimens with a laser.
