SUMMARY Recent experimental results on the variation of resolution and contrast of electron microscope images with objective lens focal length are compared with theory. Whereas there is agreement between theory and experiment for the normal range of focal lengths (2–6 mm), the experimental results indicate a far higher image contrast and inferior image resolution than predicted by theory for a very long focal length objective (12–14 mm).
