SUMMARY Surfaces of structures which may be identified in sections of plastic embedded tissue can be exposed for examination using scanning electron microscopy by removal of the embedding medium from the sectioned block with sodium methoxide. Correlation of the information provided by sections and scanning electron microscopy is therefore possible. This technique has been used in examining the developing peristome teeth of the moss Funaria hygrometrica .
