An incorrect caption to Fig. 11 was printed in this paper which was published in the Journal of Microscopy , Vol. 97, Pts 1/2, pp. 171–190. The correct caption should read ‘Unstained glutaraldehyde‐fixed 3T3 cell (bright‐ and dark‐field pair) showing mitochondria (arrowed). In wet specimens the mitochondria appear broader (possibly due to damage) and scatter electrons less strongly than the surrounding material.’
