SUMMARY In microtome sections small invisible and unrecognizable fragments cause errors in estimation of particle number and diameter. These errors can be reduced by rejecting fragments whose apparent diameter is larger than the true radius of the particles. Formulae for the calculation of diameter and number are given and the size of the errors is examined.
