SUMMARY Cell proliferation of liver epithelia in 3‐week‐old Wistar rats was re‐investigated. Up to a time interval of 54 h the percent labelled mitoses curve shows only one peak of labelled mitoses. From this peak a S‐phase of 8 h was derived. The results are compatible with the model of an exponentially growing population of liver cells with a growth fraction of unity and an' instantaneous' generation time of 7–1 days. The difficulties in describing the special mode of growth of liver cells in 3‐week‐old rats are discussed. The results are in complete contradiction to those from experiments of Post, Huang & Hoffman> (1963) and of Grisham (1969).
