SUMMARY Vacant‐site contrast observed in the field‐ion images of Pt‐Rh, Pt‐Au and Au‐Pd alloys is interpreted in terms of preferential evaporation of the solute atoms. Preferential retention of the solute atoms was observed in a Au‐Pt alloy. These observations conflict with predictions based on a theory of image formation proposed by Southworth & Ralph (1969).
