SUMMARY Difficulties encountered with existing methods of obtaining cross‐sections of textile materials have been overcome by a grinding technique. This produces good, flat sections of large area and it can be used over a wide range of materials from fibres and cigarette filter tips to fabrics and metallic fibres. Little skill or experience is required and equipment costs are low.
