SUMMARY The interference pattern seen in a birefringent cylindrically shaped fibre, e.g. a nylon fibre, when viewed through a polarizing microscope has been used by different workers to provide information about radial inhomogeneity of the internal structure of the fibres. This interference pattern is now shown to be markedly influenced by the mounting medium containing the fibre and an explanation for this behaviour, based on geometrical optics, is given.
