SYNOPSIS The relation between the size and number of cortical cells and fibre thickness is discussed with reference to various animal fibres, including several types of wool, cashmere, alpaca, and camel hair. It was found that it was possible to distinguish camel hair in a mixture from the other fibres examined on the basis of cortical‐cell size but this was the limit of positive identification by this method. The arrangement and shape of cortical cells in fibres of different cross‐sectional shape was also compared.
