SYNOPSIS No ice deformity could be detected histologically when rat liver was chilled rapidly to the temperature of solid carbon dioxide and was sectioned with a chilled knife in a cabinet refrigerated to −30°C. Slower chilling produced extra‐cellular ice deformities while elevated temperatures of the cabinet or the knife produced distortion probably due to heating during cutting.
