SYNOPSIS The survey describes the various embedding media that are now available for thin sectioning and electron microscopy, with the aim of aiding a correct choice of medium in any particular investigation. The properties of the methacrylates, the epoxy resins and the polyester resins are compared and, in particular, the basic similarities between the different mixtures containing epoxy resins are emphasized. A description of water‐soluble embedding media is included.
