SYNOPSIS In the manufacture and use of textiles, the movement of one fibre over another is important, and the same is true for the coarser fibrous materials used in brushes. For this reason, a study has been made of the surface characteristics of brushmaking fibres of animal, vegetable, and man‐made origin. The surface structures of animal fibres have been described elsewhere (Kidd, 1957; Wildman, 1954; Apple‐yard, 1960); a brief account of certain features of coarse vegetable fibres is given below.
