SYNOPSIS Measurements made on over 3400 cover‐glasses of 16 different grades show that only 43 satisfied the Royal Microscopical Society's specification of thickness and only 18 of these were of the specified refractive index. Many cover‐glasses are highly wedge‐shaped and in some samples there is a significant high positive correlation between the mean thickness and the slope of the wedge.
