. A patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) developed pancytopenia when azathioprine (first 2.0 mg kg −1 day −1 , then 2.5 mg kg −1 day −1 ) was added to prednisone for active SLE. This unusual toxic effect of azathioprine occurred during the reduction of corticosteroid dosage. After discontinuation of azathioprine, clinical and haematological recovery occurred.
