Holger Afflerbach is Professor of Central European History at the University of Leeds. Afflerbach specialises in late nineteenth and twentieth century German history; international relations; military history, particularly World War I and World War II; and Austrian and Italian history. Among his publications are the biography of the Prussian War Minister and Chief of General Staff Erich von Falkenhayn (München, 1994, second edition, 1996) and his study of the Triple Alliance, entitled “Der Dreibund. Europäische Grossmacht und Allianzpolitik vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg” (Wien 2002). His last project was a history of Surrender which resulted in two different books: A coedited volume, edited together with Hew Strachan, “How Fighting Ends. A History of Surrender” (Oxford 2012), and his single-authored book “Die Kunst der Niederlage. Eine Geschichte der Kapitulation von der Steinzeit bis heute“ (München 2013). Afflerbach was in 2012/13 Fellow of the Historische Kolleg, Munich, and writes a history of Germany during the First World War. E-Mail: H.H.W.Affler bach@ leeds.ac.uk
