Iron is known to interfere with the absorption of simultaneously taken tetracycline derivatives. The possibility to avoid this interaction, by observing a suitable time interval between the drugs, has been studied on human volunteers using ferrous sulphate and tetracycline. Three consecutive experiments were performed with 25, 20 and 15 volunteers from a pool of 38 healthy medical students. It was found that if iron was given not less than three hours before or two hours after tetracycline no significant interference occurred.
