An increasing number of studies show that sleep problems are common in individuals with developmental disabilities. Several risk factors have now been identified. In many cases, presence of a genetic disorder is related to sleep problems. Treatment of such problems in target groups has received increased attention during the last two decades. In this presentation, some trends and developments in the research (prevalence, measurement, treatment) on sleep problems will be reviewed. Special attention is given to several genetic disorders (e.g., Angelman, Prader‐Willi, Rett). Measurement issues, studies of behavioural phenotypes and treatment approaches of sleep problems in children with developmental disabilities and/or genetic disorders are discussed. More specifically, our work within the Dutch national policlinic for sleep problems will be highlighted.
