Subjects were approached in a supermarket and asked to identify, from a circular table, which of 10 possible amounts of margarine spread on bread they would consume at home. They were also asked 14 questions about their beliefs relating to fat and spreading behaviour. Some of the variability in portion weight was related to their beliefs; many of these beliefs also differed between the sexes.
