Anthropometric data, although easily collected, are readily misinterpreted. This article presents guidelines for applying anthropometric methods to the assessment of nutritional status of children. The importance of converting raw data into age‐ and sex‐independent scores is emphasized. A compilation of sources of reference standards is given and the various methods of presenting and comparing population data are discussed.
