This case study illustrates the effectiveness of two complementary feeding regimens in facilitating improvement of nutritional status in a young patient with extensive small bowel Crohn's disease with a severe concomitant malabsorption syndrome. It highlights the role of parenteral feeding in short term restorative hyperalimentation and contrasts it with sip feeding using an elemental diet to maintain and improve nutritional status. Also emphasized is the importance of improving nutritional status prior to surgery in order to minimize complications (Mullin et al. , 1980).
