A great deal has been written about the contribution a database can make to enhancing children's learning and particularly their thinking. Much, if not most, of this material has been concerned with children of post‐primary age and it has examined the uses made of the database through the traditional subjects. This article is an attempt to illustrate how the database software QUEST was used continuously over a school year with 10/11‐year‐olds operating in a multidisciplinary, project‐based approach. It claims that the database acted as a catalyst, encouraging and actively promoting a wide range of learning situations that might not have otherwise occurred.
