SUMMARY In this study, nicotine concentrations in the breast milk of lactating women were measured by gas chromatography. In one group of smokers, the concentrations measured were related to the number of cigarettes smoked earlier in the day. Low nicotine concentrations were found in the breast milk of non‐smokers exposed to a smoky atmosphere.
