SUMMARY Lignocaine and laevulose infusion is sterilized by autoclaving. On exposure to heat, laevulose partially degrades to 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (5‐HMF), which has a Λ max value at 284 nm in the UV spectrum. This overlaps the spectrum of lignocaine hydrochloride, for which the Λ max values are 264 nm and 271 nm. An assay based on second derivative spectroscopy has been developed for the lignocaine content, free from the influence of 5‐HMF.
