A series of double blind patient preference studies comparing temazepam with placebo and with nitrazepam for short‐term hypnotic effect in hospital patients was carried out. The participants' subjective views on both quality of sleep and feeling of alertness on waking were recorded. The results demonstrated that temazepam was superior to placebo but failed to show a preference for temazepam over nitrazepam within the limits of the trial when a preference ratio of 2:1 was set.
