In the 875 bed St Annadal Hospital with a Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) department servicing 8‐10 patients daily, a system has been developed to provide better quality individual TPN, which does not take much extra time for preparation. Standardized electrolyte mixtures and amino acid and dextrose solutions are used. Amino acid solutions with specific amino acid compositions are tailored to the special needs of normal patients and patients with renal insufficiency or hepatic insufficiency. When fluid restriction is required, caloric needs can be covered by dextrose solutions with concentrations up to 70%. When a patient is accepted by the team for parenteral nutrition, a daily prescription is submitted to the pharmacy. According to the patient's needs, electrolyte concentrates developed specially for this purpose, vitamins and trace elements are added to the amino acid and dextrose solutions. The solutions are mixed in special 1‐1 infusion bags by means of a vacuum method. The protocols for manufacturing the electrolyte concentrates are given.
