A gas‐chromatographic method for the rapid assay of chloramphenicol in pharmaceutical preparations is described. The procedure involves the preparation of a cyclic phenylboronate ester and the derivatization and analysis stages each occupy only 5 min. The method is applicable to the determination of chloramphenicol in solid, semi‐solid and liquid dosage forms. Degraded samples, produced either through hydrolysis or photochemical decomposition may also be monitored and the kinetics of the degradation may be followed. This has been exemplified by the determination of the degree of protection from photochemical degradation offered to chloramphenicol eye‐drops by various containers. The photochemical decomposition was also followed by high‐performance liquid chromatography.
