Summary The current method of providing the pharmacy service is described. A subjective impression that it was not adequately meeting needs during evenings, at night and at weekends led to a consideration of how these unmet needs could be correctly identified and quantified. The results of a series of studies are presented. They show that a substantial unmet need exists. The problems inherent in improving the service to provide for these needs are discussed.
