Summary The off‐line use of a Regional Health Authority computer to create opportunities for medical, nursing and pharmaceutical staff in hospitals 52 miles away to carry out research into drug efficacy, prescribing patterns, incidence of adverse reactions and drug administration is described. Information on the patient such as age, sex, diagnoses, operations and length of stay in hospital are linked with details of drug treatment before admission as an inpatient, and on discharge from hospital, allowing analysis and follow‐up as necessary. A data bank of over 22,000 drug records has been established.
