Summary A stiff dithranol 0.5% ointment showed colour changes, degradation and loss of potency after adverse storage. Varying strengths of salicylic acid were added in an attempt to protect the dithranol. A new method was employed to quantify the colour changes using a Colour Chart and to express the results as percentage reflectance values. Spectrophotometric analysis was undertaken for degradation products. Clinical assessment was carried out on a double blind basis. All three methods of assessment confirmed that the optimum strength of salicylic acid was 0.5% to ensure a good shelf life, provided the ointment was stored in well‐filled containers protected from light.
