Summary• This study describes how an item analysis of a classification system for nurses' work methods discriminates between wards operating either primary nursing or team nursing. • Four of the 13 items on the classification instrument were highly successful in discriminating between the two ward types. The four items concerned responsibility for nursing records, accountability, responsibility and authority for nursing care. • Possible reasons for why some items were more successful than others for discriminating between the ward types are discussed.
