Summary• The nursing contribution to the dilemma of which patients should or should not be resuscitated is being subjected to increasing scrutiny, from philosophical, clinical and economic viewpoints. • This paper is a critique of the current climate in which the rights of the patient are secondary to the wishes of health‐care professionals. • The paper proposes the adoption of a multidisciplinary dialogue to meet client needs. The crucial role of the nurse in this dialogue is examined and is related to the clinical practitioner's sphere of influence.
