The origins and early years of the Society are outlined. The subsequent boom in membership numbers, the development of the programme and the range and volume of the Society's publications are described. The account indicates that the Society has stabilized in size over the last decade but its enthusiasm to honour its constitution has been sustained and its activities have widened. Special interest groups have been created and the scope of meetings has continued to expand. Co‐operation with other bodies, at national and international level, for the organization of colloquia, symposia and conferences, has increased. Young scientists have been encouraged and rewarded. Programmes to foster an awareness of the nature and scope of applied microbiology in schoolchildren have been given financial and practical support. The loyal service of individuals and groups to the administration and organization of the Society is acknowledged.
