Stephen Lapage was Curator of the National Collection of Type Cultures (NCTC), 1965–78. He took early retirement because of ill health; he made a good recovery from major surgery but sadly died in October 1990. He was a member of the Society for Applied Bacteriology from 1962 and served on its Committee, 1969–72. He had a national and international reputation for his energy and enthusiasm for various aspects of research and development in bacterial taxonomy and culture collections. Many will remember a colleague with very considerable organizational abilities, good humour and wide interests.
