Semi‐solid medium was used to isolate an aerobic, N 2 ‐fixing (C 2 H 2 ‐reducing), H 2 ‐utilizing bacterium from the roots of kallar grass ( Leptochloa fusca ). The organism was identified by morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics. The N 2 ‐fixing, zoogloeal floc‐forming isolate described here is a new species.
