Biochemical and chemical studies were performed on representative strains of Bacteroides hypermegas and Bact. multiacidus in an attempt to clarify their taxonomy. The results of the present and earlier studies indicate that Bact. hypermegas and Bact. multiacidus are distinct species. On the basis of DNA base composition, enzyme patterns and lipid criteria it is suggested that both species should be excluded from the genus Bacteroides.
