A Gram negative, oxidase‐positive, bacterium which produced prodigiosin has been isolated during a survey of freshwater chromobacteria. It forms colonies with an adherent, rubbery texture on solid media and a flocculent growth in liquid culture. The organism will not grow at temperatures above 30°C nor will it tolerate concentrations of sodium chloride in excess of 0.5%.
